Empowering leadership: Motivating teams through innovation and engagement

Interview with Albert Alsina (ERNI Spain)

Motivating a team is a fundamental duty of a leader. Albert Alsina, the Managing Director of ERNI Spain, shares his leadership philosophy, which revolves around empowering and encouraging team members to embrace new challenges. This inclusive management style not only fosters innovation but also cultivates future leaders, ensuring the organisation’s long-term success and sustainability.

How do you envision fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration within the company?

Thank you for that insightful question. At ERNI Spain, we place a significant emphasis on fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration. Our services team is spearheading an exciting internal initiative known as “Shape-Ups”, which is dedicated to driving innovation within the company.

I firmly believe that companies that prioritise innovation will thrive, especially in the evolving landscape influenced by artificial intelligence and other technological advancements. Therefore, dedicating substantial time and resources to innovation is crucial for our future success.

Innovation is indeed a core focus for ERNI Spain. Our commitment to investing in and nurturing innovative ideas is something I deeply value. One of the key lessons I’ve learned at ERNI is that the company encourages and supports the implementation of good ideas. This philosophy is actively practiced here in Spain, where we are continually exploring and developing new innovative solutions.

How do you see yourself as a people manager, and what is your style of managing people?

I began my journey as a people manager here at ERNI, and I have grown significantly with the support and tools provided by the company. My management style is deeply rooted in empowering individuals and encouraging them to embrace new challenges. I place a strong emphasis on providing constructive feedback and effective delegation.

When you empower people and trust them to take ownership of their tasks, it often yields positive results. It is essential to be approachable and supportive, fostering an environment where team members feel confident and motivated. I firmly believe in the power of delegation, empowerment and encouragement as key tools for effective management.

Of course, every individual is unique, and it is important to adapt my approach to suit the diverse needs of my team members. This adaptability has been a cornerstone of my success at ERNI. As a leader, I prioritise facilitating my team’s success rather than seeking the spotlight.

I encourage open communication and ensure that everyone on the team has the opportunity to voice their opinions and contribute ideas. Together, we collaboratively decide on the best course of action.

Somebody once told me that a true leader is someone who creates other leaders, who in turn create more leaders. This philosophy has guided my approach at ERNI. By encouraging and nurturing leadership qualities in others, we are building a robust, aligned and sustainable organisation for the future. This collective effort is what makes ERNI the successful company it is today.

What are your tips for motivating your team?

Motivating a team is a crucial responsibility for any leader, and it can indeed be a challenging task. Here are some strategies that I have found effective:

  1. Engage and Share Objectives: It’s important to engage with your team and ensure that everyone understands and shares the common objectives. Clearly communicate how each team member’s contributions are vital to the overall success of the project and the organisation.
  2. Highlight Impact: Show team members the tangible impact of their work. When people see the difference they are making, it can be incredibly motivating. Utilise tools such as ERNI’s Prize and Delegation to recognise and reward their efforts.
  3. Understand Individual Needs: Each team and individual is different. Some team members thrive on challenges and need them in order to stay engaged. In such cases, it’s important to identify and present new challenges to keep them motivated. Conversely, some team members may need a stable and comfortable environment to perform their best. As a leader, you need to adapt your approach to meet these varying needs.
  4. Support and Shield: For teams that require a more comfortable environment, it’s essential to act as a buffer against external pressures. By taking on the brunt of any external stress, you allow your team to focus on their tasks without unnecessary distractions.
  5. Build Relationships: Take the time to engage with your team members on a personal level. Understanding their individual motivations, strengths and areas for growth will help you tailor your approach to keep them motivated. Building strong relationships fosters a sense of trust and loyalty, which can significantly enhance team morale and productivity.

By applying these strategies, I have been able to lead diverse teams successfully at ERNI. Each team is unique, and as a leader, it is crucial to be flexible and responsive to their specific needs to maintain high levels of motivation and engagement.

You mentioned that leaders should create leaders who create leaders. What is your advice to anyone who is aspiring to become a leader and to advance their careers?

Let me share an example to illustrate my point. When I was appointed to my current role, I received a message from a former Managing Director in Spain. We exchanged a few words, and he told me, “I knew when you joined that you were going to achieve great things at ERNI.” Curious, I asked him how he knew that, especially since I wasn’t directly reporting to him. His response was simple: “You had the right attitude.”

This anecdote underscores a fundamental truth: sometimes, it’s all about attitude, passion and the willingness to achieve something meaningful. When you are authentic and enjoy your work, then it is easier to spread your passion.

Inspire others not only to achieve their goals but also in the manner they pursue them. Share strong values and a common purpose, and lead by example. Remember, leadership is not just about holding a title; it’s about making a positive impact and empowering those around you.
